Schedule D ToolsNeed help with Schedule D reporting? Schedule D Tools keeps track of clients' cost basis in stocks across multiple portfolios. It generates a fileable Form 8949, as well as a Realized Gains and Losses report to produce the net amounts needed for your tax preparation software. Schedule D Tools allows data entry throughout the year for high volume traders, generates reports to facilitate mid-year tax planning, and calculates and correctly reports complicated wash sales—even same-day and cross-portfolio wash sales. Transactions can be exported as CSV files for import into popular tax prep programs. A free Data Entry version can be distributed to your clients to allow them to enter their own transactions.

LivePayrollLooking for a simple, reasonably-priced payroll program? LivePayroll makes it easy to process payroll—either actively or after-the-fact—and file all of the necessary payroll tax returns. LivePayroll automatically calculates wages based on the employee’s annual salary or hours worked and hourly rate, federal withholding, state withholding, local withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and other payroll deductions. The program allows you to customize income, tax, and deduction items for each employer, track vacation and sick leave, print paychecks—on blank check stock or preprinted checks—or process direct deposits.

Renew by May 31st and take 30% off any CFS program you have never purchased before. Click here for a list of all software titles.

IRS Warns of Door-to-Door Scams
In a recent news release, the IRS warns that scammers claiming to be IRS employees are showing up at taxpayers' doors. Although "IRS revenue officers will sometimes make unannounced visits to a taxpayer’s home or place of business," they generally do not do so until after the taxpayer has received several notices in the mail. They also do not:

  • Demand that you use a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer.
  • Demand that you pay taxes without the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  • Threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying.

They should be able to furnish two forms of credential: an "HSPD-12" card (standard ID for Federal employees and contractors) and a "pocket commission" (standard IRS ID that provides "evidence of the holder's specific authority and responsibility").

For more information, see IR-2017-86 and "How to know it’s really the IRS calling or knocking on your door" on the IRS website.
