Tax news: AMT patch has uncertain fate.
As of this writing, Congress has yet to pass an extension that would prevent the alternative minimum tax from hitting millions of taxpayers this year. A bill (H.R 3996) was passed by the House on November 9. However, due to revenue offsets caused by Congress’ pay-as-you-go budget rules, its fate is uncertain in the Senate, and the White House has threatened to veto it in its current form.

The bill, the Temporary Tax Relief Act of 2007, also contains three dozen popular expiring tax provisions, including research and development tax credit, the deduction of state and local sales taxes, the above-the-line deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses, and the above-the-line deduction for expenses of schoolteachers.

Although all parties agree with the need for urgent AMT relief and the extension of the popular credits, political wrangling over the revenue offsets could push debate into December or even January. The IRS has said such delays would wreak havoc on refunds for early tax season filers. In an exchange of letters, Congress was rebuked in its attempt to have the IRS program its computers and design its forms based on the pending legislation.

It looks as if Congress will once again delay passage of AMT relief until it affects our busy tax season. Stay tuned as this political drama unfolds.

Have you updated your license code?
With tax season just around the corner, now is a good time to make sure you have an up-to-date license code to unlock all of your CFS software.

Most of our programs are shipped on a single "CFS Software" CD. A unique license code, based on your name and address and the programs you have purchased, gives you full access to the programs you have purchased and limited access for demonstration purposes to other programs on the CD. If you purchase additional programs at a later date, you will receive a new license code which you must enter to gain full access to the additional programs purchased.

If, for example, you purchased the 941/940 program earlier this year and now purchase W2/1099, your current license code will not give you access to W2/1099, even though the program may already be installed on your computer. You must enter the new code you received when you purchased the W2/1099 program.

Your license code can be found on the receipt that was mailed to you, or it can be retrieved online here.

Save time and money—avoid computer problems during tax season!
CFS technical support and our toll-free number are free. However, time is money, especially during tax season. January is the busiest time for technical support, when you are also at your busiest—finishing your payroll and sales tax reports, installing new programs and getting ready for income tax returns. Although we have excellent response times, during tax season you are bound to experience delays.

The following suggestions may help you avoid some common technical support issues, saving you valuable time during tax season.

  1. Most tech calls involve installation, update, and printing issues. Install and test your software early, and you will be ahead of the game. Install your W2/1099 program now and print some test forms using the same computer and printer you will use in January. If you are going to e-file W2 or 1099 forms, go through the program's help file and make sure you are not missing a pin number, password or any other critical details.
  2. If you haven't already done so, go to our web site and create a My CFS account. If you already have an account, check your information, including your e-mail address.
  3. Our web site has a number of resources to help you resolve technical issues on your own:
    1. Look up your license code to make sure you have the correct key to unlock all your CFS programs.
    2. Check Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for detailed solutions to many common problems you might encounter.
    3. Look in the Forums section to see if someone else has asked the same question and received an answer.
    4. We have posted several brief instructional videos to assist you with such tasks as downloading software, importing data from QuickBooks®, and e-filing W2s and 1099s using the W2/1099 E-File Add On. Included are three videos on the new LivePayroll program.

In the words of John Wooden, "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." Be prepared, and you will be one of the majority of our customers who don't need to call for technical support.
