IRS allowable living expense standards issued.
On October 1, 2007, the IRS issued revised allowable living expense standards. The allowable living expense standards, also known as collection financial standards, are used to determine a taxpayer’s ability to pay delinquent tax liabilities. For purposes of federal tax administration, the new standards are effective October 1, 2007. For bankruptcy purposes, the effective date for the new standards is January 1, 2008.

A new category has been added for out-of-pocket medical expenses, such as prescription drugs and eyeglasses. A nationwide set of tables is now provided for national standard expenses, eliminating separate tables for Alaska and Hawaii. Also eliminated are income ranges for national standards for food, clothing, and other items. Other changes include an allowance for cell phone costs, equal allowances for first and second vehicles, and a separate nationwide public transportation allowance.
