Postal rates have increased—more than you may have thought.
The postal rate change went into effect on May 14th, and there are more changes than the introduction of the much-ballyhooed 41-cent "Forever Stamp."

The Postal Service's new pricing structure is not just based on weight, but also on package size, shape and even flexibility. Letter-size pieces are least expensive to mail, followed by "flats" (large envelopes), and finally parcels.

The "flats" category includes many of the larger sized envelopes used by tax preparers to mail tax returns and other information to clients. The new postal rates for flats start at $0.80 for the first ounce—nearly double the rate for letters. And if a "flat" piece of mail is not flexible (bendable by at least an inch both vertically and horizontally), it qualifies as a parcel, making the rate even higher.

For more information, see the United States Postal Service web site, here.
